Activity 4. Back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle

Activity 4: Back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle

Objectives:

At the end of this module, the student will be able to:

  • List the different stages of the back-end.
  • Describe the basic characteristics of each stage of the back-end.
  • Identify the facilities associated with each stage of the back-end worldwide.
  • Estimate the composition, heat of decay and radiotoxicity of spent fuel.

Student work:

Individual

Products:

  • Case study solved

Resources:

  • Interactive book H5P

Instructions:

  1. Read the case study situation carefully.
  2. Respond to the 4 points raised in a text file.
  3. Continuing with the front-end case study, once the batch of 50 fuel assemblies, whose total mass is 27.271 tons of heavy metal, is discharged from the reactor, after having spent three years producing energy, it is necessary to know the composition of the spent fuel. To do this, then, calculate:
  4. The mass in kilograms of uranium, plutonium, minor actinides, and fission products.
  5. To evaluate the option to reprocess the fuel, it is necessary to know the mass in kilograms per ton of fuel discharged [kg/tHM], of each of the following isotopes: U-235, U-238, Np-237, Pu-238, Pu-239, Pu-240, Pu-241, Pu-242, Am-241, Am-242, Am-243, Cm-242, Cm- 244
  6. The decay heat in kW per ton of fuel discharged [kW/tHM] after two years, six years and twelve years from the discharge of the reactor. The following is the graph of the curve fit of the decay heat behavior of one PWR fuel assembly after discharge from the reactor: kW vs years.

  7. The radiotoxicity in Sieverts per ton of fuel discharged [Sv/tHM] after 25 years, 75 years and 175 years. The following is the graph of the curve fit of the radiotoxicity behavior of the PWR fuel discharged from the reactor.

Hint: Assume that the batch mass of the discharged fuel is the same as that of the fresh fuel, i.e., 27.271 tons.
